We've served the greater Austin area since 2000, and every spring we get the same call: wasps have set up shop under an eave, on a porch, or inside a wall cavity. The good news is that a few small changes go a long way toward keeping them from nesting in the first place.
What attracts wasps to your home
Wasps look for two things: food and sheltered nesting spots. Central Texas offers both in abundance. Common draws include:
- Uncovered trash, recycling, and pet food
- Sugary drinks and fallen fruit near patios
- Untreated wood on decks, fences, and play sets (paper wasps chew it for nest material)
- Gaps in soffits, siding, and vents that make ideal sheltered cavities
Simple prevention that works
- Seal exterior gaps and cracks before spring swarming
- Keep trash bins closed and rinse recyclables
- Trim back vegetation touching the house
- Check eaves and ceilings early in the season for the first small nests
When to call a pro
